Title- Sensory Identity™- The Missing Link in the Neurodiversity Conversation

Neurodiversity is finally receiving the attention it deserves.

But here’s the question I keep asking:
Are we going deep enough?

We talk about ADHD, Autism, and inclusion. But we often skip the most practical, actionable layer underneath it all – Sensory Identity™.
And that’s where real empowerment begins.

What Is Sensory Identity™?

Your Sensory Identity™ is your unique sensory neurotype.

It reflects:

  • Your sensory thresholds
  • How your nervous system processes input
  • What overwhelms you
  • What energises you
  • What helps you focus
  • What drains you

It is your baseline wiring.

And whether someone is formally diagnosed with ADHD, Autism, both, or neither, sensory processing plays a foundational role in how they experience the world.

Neurodiversity Is the Label. Sensory Identity™ Is the Mechanism

A diagnosis can provide validation. It can open doors to support and explain lifelong patterns.

But a diagnosis does not tell you:

  • Why open-plan offices exhaust you
  • Why you avoid certain environments
  • Why you hyperfocus in one context but shut down in another
  • Why transitions feel disproportionately hard

That’s sensory.

Through tools like the Sensory Matrix™, we uncover sensory thresholds – high, low, medium, or fluctuating – and begin to understand the how behind the diagnosis.

Because two people with ADHD can have completely different Sensory Identities™, and two Autistic individuals can have opposite sensory needs.

From Awareness to Application

This is where Sensory Intelligence® becomes transformative.

Instead of asking: “What’s wrong with me?”

We begin asking:

  • What does my nervous system need?
  • Where is my threshold low?
  • Where do I seek more input?
  • How does my environment support or sabotage me?

This shifts the narrative from limitation to strategy.

It also shifts workplaces and families from generic accommodations to targeted adjustments. Not everyone needs noise-cancelling headphones or less stimulation.

Some need more.

When we understand Sensory Identity, we stop over-accommodating blindly and start designing environments intelligently.

Why This Matters in the Neurodiversity Space

Right now, the neurodiversity conversation is expanding rapidly. Awareness is increasing, which is wonderful.

But without sensory understanding, we risk two extremes:

  • Over-pathologising normal human variation
  • Overgeneralising diagnostic categories

Sensory Identity™ brings nuance.

It reminds us that:

We are all somewhere on a sensory spectrum.

Not everyone has ADHD or Autism.

But everyone has a sensory profile.

And that profile shapes behaviour more than we realise.

Empowerment, Not a Crutch

Understanding your Sensory Identity™ should never become something you hide behind. It should become something you leverage.

Yes, employers have a responsibility to provide reasonable accommodation.

Yes, inclusive design matters deeply.

But empowerment also means:

  • Knowing your thresholds
  • Communicating your needs clearly
  • Developing regulation strategies
  • Taking ownership of your performance

When diagnosis meets Sensory Intelligence®, we unlock superpowers, not excuses.

The Future of Neurodiversity Work

If we truly want inclusive schools, workplaces, and communities, we must move beyond labels alone.

We need:

Because inclusion isn’t about categories, it’s about fit. And fit begins with understanding Sensory Identity™.
